Our Home is On Fire: Ecospiritual news this week

Novasutras’ eighth ecospiritual news livestream offered news about global responses to the climate emergency, noting it is far past time to act as if our home is on fire. We reviewed the urgent calls for radical transformation presented in the Pope’s recent exhortation to Catholics, and the World Scientists’ Warning. We shared video of last month’s Climate Week actions from around the world. Sacred activism is needed: to resist fossil fuel expansion, protect vital tropical rainforest, to encourage economic and social justice, to reduce suffering, and to grow agaya and ubuntu for all.

Michelle read excerpts from urgent calls to action around the climate and extinction crises. She also shared photos from the fires raging in Indonesia during this year’s El Niño, and the dangerous wildfire smoke haze in Singapore and across Southeast Asia (Sundaland) during the 2015 El Niño. She suggested some actions in defense of a thriving biosphere (see links below).

What Greta Thunberg said in 2020 is even more urgent today:

Our house is still on fire. Your inaction is fueling the flames by the hour. We are telling you to act as if you loved your children above all else.

Michelle closed this session with a guided meditation. In Novasutras, we encourage meditation and other wellness practices that can promote spiritual growth, deepening our power and resilience. Our practice together helps us to remain effective agents for positive change, even as we experience the disruptions brought on by global injustice and climate change.
